.firestorm 2007 (extra thoughts)

blot out the sun

rather odd how it was semi-business as usual even with all these fires. i did go to work that monday (and waited for the the office to officially close due to the fires). i noticed when i went to lunch that everything/everybody was still going thru as if it was a normal day (at least for those not directly affected by the fires). you still had to wait in line at fast food places. people are still jogging/biking/walking their dogs. but if you looked out into the horizon all you see is smoke (dark gray in some directions, more orange-y in others). air quality still kinda sucks even after nearly a week.

made me think that maybe George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, where zombies still flock to the mall, may not be that absurd after all.

.firestorm 2007 (the next day)

my cousin’s family and one of their neighbor’s family ended up staying with us since they had to evacuate that monday. they were allowed back wednesday afternoon. thankfully they’re okay and so was their house (although some neighborhoods close to them weren’t as fortunate)

mimian (evacuee) loved shooting me with a toy shotgun when she was at the house

my friend (who i was helping move when the fire started) also had to evacuate that monday, is also okay.

i was helping my friend move some furniture from Murrietta to Poway when the fire started. we didnt think too much about it even though the fire was just a bit north of where we were (the 1-15 freeway was already filled with smoke in Rancho Bernardo when we drove thru…it was a beat up old dodge pickup truck and the rear windows don’t close)

woke up early that saturday morning, looked out my window and everything was bright orange

.things you would lose in a fire

you’d have to wonder what would you rather not lose in case of a fire, if you were given time to round up your belongings in advance.

the surrounding areas 5 miles or so north and 5 miles east (and some parts i heard in the west too) have been ordered to evacuate due to the firestorm all over san diego and other parts of southern california. we havent evacuated yet but are on standby just in case. unfortunately the earlier communities that had to evacuate have filled up one of the evac centers in the county (which is walking distance from where i am)

but here i am looking at all my unnecessary possessions/belongings and wondering if i really do need them (i don’t). yet i’ve started packing some of them anyway. i think i’ve tried to keep as much of items that have sentimental value. a scribble here, an old candy wrapper there. little knick knacks, toys, scraps of paper. items not necessary for survival purposes. but they remind of little things and of other times. as if i am more concerned of memories i would be losing than the results of the surrounding disaster would bring.

kind of an odd way of reassessing your life and priorities of which i was never good at in the first place.

took a sip of the Mae de Ouro first, then ended up finishing the Germana. added more sugar to the Mae de Ouro then finished that one.

i was expecting the Germana to have more kick, but it went down rather smoothly. Mae de Ouro has a bit more kick to it, and by kick i meant felt the buzz.
