.the ultimate graphic designer shirt

February 28, 2008

yes, i do.
common misconception of what designers do for a living

from veer.com

It’s word association. You say “I’m a designer,” and they hear “I draw pictures all day.” It would take too long to explain what you really do, so take the words right out of their mouth and wear them proudly.

also came with these in the mail:

.mini rolitoboys blindbox

February 22, 2008

i normally try not to get blindboxed items unless they were given away for free, but i figured i try this series since i like most of the 12 random choices anyway. Mini Rolitoboy French Kiss Serie (got 5 of them for now)
Mini Rolitoboy French Kiss Serie Blind Box

2 of the items ended up being the same, not so bad since the heads have separate “faces” front and back (and the one that didnt have a duplicate actually has the same face front and back)

2 by Stan and Vince, 2 by Rolito and 1 by La Chienne
mini rolitoboys, stan and vince
mini rolitoboys, rolito
mini rolitoboys, la chienne

i might get more of these, but i’d probably buy some of the unboxed ones first so at least i’ll get at least 1 of each version

Andreas Müller, For All Seasons

For All Seasons
by Andreas Müller.
wish more of his work is mac-accessible..

saw the next few from WOOSTER.

On The Road of Knives by Zak Smith, Shawn Cheng and Nicholas Di Genova.

So this is how it works: Zak draws something. Shawn draws something that will fight it. Zak draws his thing fighting back. Shawn draws his thing fighting back and maybe tripping over a statue. Then maybe Zak’s thing kills Shawn’s with the statue’s head. Then Shawn draws a new thing. Zak’s surviving thing attacks it. And so on. Zak and Shawn got things started, and now Nick has joined the fray. Though not exactly an exquisite corpse, it will be exquisite, and there will be many corpses.

.batman: gotham knight

February 19, 2008

direct to dvd batman animated short stories coming this summer. similar to Animatrix (some of the same anime studios are working on the segments). also similar to Dark Fury, another direct to dvd animated feature by Peter Chung (of Aeon Flux fame) in that the stories are set in between the Batman Begins movie and the upcoming Dark Knight.

the full sneak preview:

just the anime segments:

link to article and screenshots

Madhouse studios (whose animating one of the stories) is most famous in the west for creating Ninja Scroll. the first work i saw from them was a short called Running Man that was shown in the second season of MTV’s Liquid Television. Liquid Television also used segments of Ninja Scroll in a later season.

The Running Man is available on the dvd Neo Tokyo, which seems to be hard to find these days (i checked amazon.com and it’s priced at $60!!!). i guess i wont be replacing my Hong Kong version of the dvd just yet.

.hello, please! and meet mr. product

February 3, 2008

recently picked up these books on character art/iconography in advertising/culture/daily life. although one focuses on Japanese and the other on American character icons, both books kind of go hand in hand. also interesting to note that the ad character has become less prevalent in american advertising/culture, while the opposite is true in japan.

Offering up a bustling gallery of over 500 spokescharacters, this chunky compendium charts the origins and development of the advertising character and gives brief glimpses into some of their most intimate secrets. (Did you know that the Michelin Man has been spotted with glamorous ladies on his arm? Or that Borden s Elsie the Cow was married to Elmer of household glue fame?) Famous faces and a host of recently rediscovered characters fill Meet Mr. Product s pages to bursting

some of the characters would be considered quite offensive these days. Just like the Adidas/Ray Fong character controversy from a few years back. click here for the controversy.

A menagerie of mascots and characters inhabit the islands of Japan, cheerfully guiding citizens through all sorts of daily activities and situations. Hello, Please! collects photographs of hundreds of the these cute (or kawaii) creatures in their native habitats, which are virtually everywhere: from public street signs to supermarket shelves, in doctor’s offices and instruction manuals even emblazoned on the sides of Tokyo’s emergency vehicles.

Here’s an article i read back in 1999 on the Culture of Kawaii (Cute), from Wired magazine.

it would have been nice if the actual designers/illustrators were credited in both books, but then that’s the nature of being in design/advertising.

.portfolio overhaul

February 2, 2008

not to be confused with the subsection link on the right hand side of this blog, this is the more professional looking version (for both online and in person). also added a more streamlined portfolio section (for prospective employers/clients only). i will still keep the current convoluted version of the site/blog (for now).

aluminum portfolio case and sample work on one sheet:
aluminum portfolio case and sample sheet

the plain aluminum portfolio case was too plain so i decided to spruce it up a bit:

the sample sheet is also available in pdf format. trying to cover 2 bases at once.

the cleaner portfolio site which most people won’t see. first 2 screenshots is how the site would look if the viewer had maxed out their screen resolution. the last 2 screenshots is how it would look for the opposite end of the spectrum. the main difference is the bar at the bottom of the page (only shows up when screen resolution is maxed since it’s on a fixed size background image)

rather minimalist overall style which is the opposite of most of my earlier work.
